THE WEDDING

As most of you have probably guessed, our wedding will take place in Lithuania.

We hope you are as excited as us to be able to celebrate our wedding in such an amazing location.

The venue, where we will hold both the ceremony and the reception, is an old historic manor house situated just outside of Kaunas - Lithuania’s second largest city. The city has many great places to stay that are just a short taxi journey from the venue. It also has a lovely Old Town that is well worth exploring should you wish to make a bit of a holiday out of your trip.

There is plenty of parking space at the venue should you choose to drive.

Lithuanian weddings are well known for going on until the early hours of the morning so be sure to have your party shoes ready for an evening of fun and dancing after the ceremony.

THE LAKE HOUSE

For those who want to stay longer, after all Lithuania is a long way to go just for one night, then there is also the option to come join us the day after the wedding at the lake house for drinks and a BBQ.

Ilgajis is a lake about an hour drive from Kaunas, with a large holiday home complex for people to stay the night. The lake is a great place for a swim so don’t forget your swimming costume. There’s even a pedal boat and places to go fishing if swimming isn’t quite your thing. The venue also includes a hot tub and sauna.

GET TO KNOW LITHUANIA

Obviously we think Lithuania is great. But we know that most people don’t really know that much about this wonderful country. So on this page we’ve tried to put together a little bit of information for you. Not only should this help you plan your trip but also get you excited about your visit.

Check out this great video we found which gives you a quick overview of Lithuania and get some ideas of places to go and see if you’re planning on extending your visit after the wedding.

Below are also a few suggestions of ‘must try’ food and drinks while in Lithuania. which you should be able to get in most restaurants.

We have also put together a list of destinations that are slightly further away for those who are planning exploring the country before or after the wedding.

And if you’re brave enough to try one of the most difficult languages in the world there are a few handy phrases. Though you might want to get a bit of help with the pronunciation before you try and impress you friends.

FOOD & DRINK

Zeppelins (Matt’s favourite)
The National dish of Lithuania. A dish of stuffed potato dumplings, covered in sour cream and bacon sauce. Named because of their resemblance to zeppelin airships.

Smagusis Kočėlas
A selection of Lithuanian shots. They are similar to a flavoured brandy, but infused with different herbs. Some stronger than others and with a good range of flavours.

kepta-duona-su-pikantisku-padazu.jpg

Kepta Duona
Lithuanian dark rye bread fried in oil, seasoned with garlic and salt, and served with cheese sauce. Traditionally eaten as a snack to accompany beer or two. Very moreish!

saltibarsciai.jpg

Saltibarsciai
Cold beetroot and kefir soup with hardboiled eggs and boiled potatoes. You can’t miss its shocking bright pink colour.

PLACES TO VISIT

1920px-Cepelinai_2,_Vilnius,_Lithuania_-_Diliff.jpg

Vilnius
Lithuania’s capital is known for its baroque architecture, seen especially in its medieval Old Town. There are loads of sites to see here so be sure to check it out if you get a chance.

castle 2.jpeg

Trakai Island Castle
On an island in Lake Galvė, this stone castle is one of Lithuania’s most beautiful sites. An hour from Kaunas and 30 minuets from Vilnius, it’s well worth the trip.

Anyksciai.jpeg

Anyksciai
The best places you can visit for amazing walks along the river, through pine forests and see the history of the land. For a relaxing time we recommend staying at the Anyksciai SPA.

Nida
If you have time to go slightly further on your travels then head to the beach. Nida is a fancy beach town a short ferry ride across the Kuršių bay with some pretty spectacular sand dunes.

KAUNAS

As most people will likely be staying in Kaunas during the wedding, as it is the closest main town to the venue, we have put together a few lists to help people choose where to stay, where to go out and where to visit in your spare time.

Kaunas has a really lovely Old Town, which is the main area to stay, with plenty of lovely small hotels, restaurants and bars. You’re also welcome to take a quick look at this video if you would like to see some of the local sights.

HOTELS & APARTMENTS

There are plenty of hotels dotted throughout Kaunas. Most of which are great value. We would suggest staying in one of the hotels located in the Old Town, such as The Amberton or The Daugirdas Hotel. This way you will be closer to some of the better bars and restaurants. There are also some good options closer to the city centre as well as a good number of apartments available on sites such as Airbnb.

RESTAURANTS & BARS

YZY Bar - Good for drinks and food in the Old Town

Bernelių užeiga - Great for traditional food

rePUBlic No.3 - Late night drinking

Lithuanian Pub Entry - Good list of drinks

Motiejaus kepyklele - Great Lithuanian bakery

Avilys - Restaurant with it’s own brewery

POINTS OF INTEREST

Cathedral Basilica of Sts. Peter and Paul - The main church of the old town (Also where the Bus will pick people up to go to the wedding)

Kaunas Castle - Historic castle near the old town

St. Michael the Archangel's Church - At the top of the main shopping street, Laisvės al.

Christ's Resurrection Church - Climb to the top for a great view over Kaunus

Aleksotas Observation Deck - A great view point to see the city

Akropolis - The main shopping centre

TRAVEL INFORMATION

The closest main town to the venue is Kaunas. It is approximately 30 minutes drive between the Old Town and the venue. If you are planning on flying over for the weekend then there are flight options from both Gatwick and Luton that fly directly to Kaunas. These can sell out and get quite expensive as last minuet purchases, so be sure to book your ticket in plenty of time.

Alternatively, if you are planning on having a slightly longer stay we would recommend you fly into Vilnius, the capital of Lithuania. There are lots of great hotels and apartments to stay in, though we’d advise you try and avoid staying too close to the main train station. There are many great restaurants and bars to go out to for the night. From there it’s only about an hour to Kaunas and you can easily hire a car, get a train or if you’re feeling brave take one of the many mini bus services.

TAXI

Taxis are pretty cheap in Lithuania. But it’s best to use their version of Uber for the best prices. If you download the app ‘Bolt (Taxify)’ you should be able to use the app to order taxis to your location and pay on card.
